JAMMU, Apr 18: Jammu born, Bombay-based singer-songwriter Akshita Mengi released her fifth single, “Jigre” today.
This powerful hip-hop anthem passionately promotes women’s empowerment in a world where they are reclaiming their voices and challenging patriarchy.
Akshita shares, “This song was born from the raw emotions of witnessing the daily struggles women face-abuse, harassment, discrimination, and oppression.” She continues, “You see, patriarchy seeks to suppress women not out of strength, but from fear of women’s undeniable capabilities.
‘Jigre’ shows how women have risen up. The contrast between past and present is striking. Mengi expresses this through the lines: ‘Kisi ne toh sach hi kaha hai, sab kuch ye waqt ka imtehaan hai, jo kal ladkhadhakar chal rahi thi, aaj tere samne azaad hai’.
Having been recognized as one of the top-voted artists for April 2023 by Findie and performing in numerous concerts across various cities, Akshita’s latest single is a power-packed, vocal-driven track with thought-provoking lyrics that explore gender dynamics.
“I hope to spark a light of courage and fearlessness in the women listening to this song,” she adds. “If I can achieve that, then ‘Jigre’ has fulfilled its purpose.”
With its compelling beats and profound depth, “Jigre” serves as both a celebration of the unstoppable spirit of women and a reminder that the fight for equality is essential and unavoidable.
Akshita’s music draws inspiration from fellow artists and bands, including NF, Coldplay, The Local Train, Anuv Jain, Prateek Kuhad, and Ben Howard, which shapes her unique sound.
Her previous works include “Noor” (2023), inspired by the loss of her dog, which has garnered over 45,000 Spotify streams. Earlier releases include “Runaway” (2022), selected by MG Motors for a funded music video and “House of Cards” (2021), which was featured on Spotify’s “New Music Friday India”. She has a couple more releases set to follow this year.
