SRINAGAR, June 15: Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has tendered out the construction work of Sakipathri Island on the river Lidder after spending lakhs of rupees on the same construction in the year 2012-13.
The works that were carried out then, were destroyed in the floods that followed, however, the PDA has retendered the work without an action plan in case of recurring floods.
In this regard, the Municipal Committee (MC), Pahalgam has stopped the work that has been going on after it has been commissioned on the pretext that the construction material is being dig out of the river Lidder, something, which it said is totally prohibited.
MC Chairman, Rayees Lone told Excelsior that he has sought the details from the PDA on the amount that was spent on earlier works destroyed by the floods, and the amount that has been earmarked for the fresh construction.
“In the meantime, the MC has seized the JCBs and the tractors that were used to extract the construction material such as Bajri and sand from the river. It is totally against the rules and regulations,” he said.
He said that as per the rules for any construction being carried out in Pahalgam, the material has to come from outside. He added that he has sought a reply from the PDA on how it was extracting the material from the river without seeking the permission.
He also said that he has asked the office to put out a plan it has in consideration which can help in protecting the Island in cases of recurring floods in the river.
It is worth to be mentioned that the PDA is intending to build an island like Park on the Lidder River which has been named as Sakipathri Island.
