SRINAGAR, May 23: The Government has decided to take up extraction of timber at a massive scale to ensure that the fallen and damaged trees in the forests do not go waste and are utilized for meeting the public demand.
Stating this, the Minister for Forests and Environment, Mian Altaf Ahmed, while chairing a meeting of State Forest Corporation, asked the authorities to start the survey and take immediate steps to utilize the huge number of fallen trees in the forests. He said that due to recent wind storm a sizable number of forest trees have fallen, adding that the Corporation and Forest Department should take immediate steps to extract this timber so that it do not go waste.
The Chief Conservator Forest Kashmir informed the meeting that 5 lakh cft of timber has already been handed over to the State Forest Corporation, adding that 25 lakh cft of timber will be handed over to it shortly.
In Addition, the Forest Department will extract 10 lakh cft of timber for supply to various forest sale depots. The State Forest Corporation, will also augment this supply by providing another 3 lakh cft timber to Forest Department.
The Minister asked the State Forest Corporation and Forest Department to issue necessary instructions to all divisions and make best use of the fallen trees by timely action. He urged upon the officers of Forest Department that all the technical clearance for handing over forest compartments should be completed henceforth. He directed the SFC Department that all the men and machinery should be geared up for extraction and dumping of timber for timely supply to the consumers of the State for construction purposes.
