Ambani, other Indian biz leaders to meet Ban on MDGs

MUMBAI, Apr 28: Indian business leaders including Reliance Industries Chief Mukesh Ambani, will today meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, government officials and civil society representatives to discuss India’s progress in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The meeting here will focus on how Indian business leaders can help to ensure significant progress towards achieving the MDGs on various social issues, a statement said.
“It will be an honour to meet today with the UN Secretary-General and discuss how we in the business community can improve health outcomes in India,” Ambani, who is also a member of the advocacy group on MDGs said.
Later in the evening, Ambani and other MDG Advocates will host an event for members of the private, non-profit bodies, government and other sectors, highlighting ways in which progress can be made for improving health of women and children in India.
A key theme of the meetings here will be the significant market opportunities for India’s business community in scaling up optimal, affordable, and high-quality products and services in order to accelerate India’s progress towards the MDGs, it said.
“Much progress has been made in India, but to meet the MDGs and save the lives of 16 million women and children, a collective effort from all sectors is required. The private sector can lead the way,” the statement quoted Ban Ki-moon to say.
Ambani said that “in tangible ways, we can use our business acumen to advance progress already underway to ensure healthier, stronger futures for women and children”.
The discussions will mainly centre around public-private partnerships to promote health. (PTI)
