The idea of initiating a country-wide massive project of road connectivity was given by the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He wanted north-south and east-west corridors to be built across the Indian heartland. Road connectivity is in fact the sheet anchor of country’s economic development. Modi Government promises to pursue this idea vigorously. According to the information from reliable sources, daily construction of National Highway has risen from 2 km to 7 kms which is seven-fold increase. Central Government envisages investing five lakhs crore rupees in road projects. We highly appreciate that the present Government wants to translate Vajpayee’s dream into reality. Building the roads means building India and giving a great fillip to her trade and commerce as well as mobility of the people of India.
It is true that the biggest hurdle in road building or road widening project is that of land acquisition. Usually there are disputes among the owners of land and that ends in litigations and the building of roads is delayed. This is what has been experienced in the case of 4-laning of National Highway also. Anyway, steps are being proposed at various levels to overcome this problem. In a democratic country, the rule of law has to be adhered even if it is time consuming. But we are hopeful that these difficulties will be overcome in due course of time and that the road building project as envisaged by the Union Minister for Road Transport will be accomplished in time.
