Srinagar, Apr 5: With large gatherings witnessed at Tulip and other various gardens in Kashmir, the health experts today expressed their concerns over the non-adherence and complacency on the part of the Government as well as the public about COVID-19 SOPs as the second wave of the pandemic raged in J&K.
They said that while the admissions in the hospitals have increased amid a daily surge in the cases, there is a need for the public to adhere to the SOPs and there is no option for the laidback attitude which galore on the streets and other gatherings on daily basis.
Dr Aijaz Kaul of the Department of Medicine, SKIMS told Excelsior that any aggregation is a very serious issue in a pandemic and that there is a need for adhering to SOPs.
“Be schools, festivals or any other gathering, it must be avoided and we have to understand that the virus is on a spree, the most important is to save yourself by COVID appropriate behaviour,” he said.
A doctor on the condition of anonymity told Excelsior that the situation is bad in the hospitals as there has been an increase in the severely sick cases.
He said that the public, as well as the Government, must understand the gravity of the situation and stick to the guidelines that have been issued.
“If the same continues, there are all the chances that the situation might turn ugly. The public has to understand the fact that the COVID-19 is ruthless,” he said.
Dr Nisar ul Hassan, of Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar’s Medicine Department said that the complacency is responsible for the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in Kashmir valley and outside.
“While the complacency is primarily responsible for the resurgence of COVID-19 cases, the huge gatherings that are being organized can prove fatal. On one hand, the Government is asking the public to adhere to the SOPs but on the other side, musical concerts and other gatherings are being arranged,” he said.
The doctors said that adherence to the SOPs and the vaccination has to go parallel and that those who have already been vaccinated also cannot resort to the complacent attitude.
“It is a continuous process and the public has to understand that; vaccination does not allow a person to resort to complacency,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) also expressed its concerns over the laidback attitude of people amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which it said, can prove “disastrous”.
The medico body criticized the move of re-opening of public parks and organising musical concerts stating that the move may be disastrous as these social, political or religious gatherings can turn out to be hot spots for the spread of infection.
