AMM leaders urge Leighton authorities to stop violation of labour laws

JAMMU, Nov 4:  Addressing a well attended rally of workers of Chenani-Nashri road tunnel project at Chenani today, the Awami Muttahida Mahaz (AMM) leaders comprising of State Secretary CPI (M) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, president Samajwadi Party Shiekh Abdul Rehman and president IDP, I D Khajuria stated that the right to organize peaceful protests was an inalienable right of the people in a democratic polity and the workers of this project were being stifled of their democratic rights.
While condemning the police crackdown on the workers, the AMM leaders said that the way right to peaceful protests is being stifled; it will only encourage the emergence of autocratic and violent forces in the society. They demanded immediate release of workers who have been detained by police in false and frivolous cases.
The AMM leaders stressed upon the Government to avoid confrontation and find out an amicable solution to the issues through negotiations with the representatives of workers unions and associations. “The long pending genuine demands of the Chenani-Nashri workers should be given a patient hearing by the management and an amicable solution should be reached at which can end this stalemate,” they demanded.
They lamented that the workers at Chenani-Nashri tunnel-road project are not being paid even minimum wages, their allowance for over time and not covered under benefits of Employees Provident Fund Act and there is no sufficient safety mechanism available to them.
The AMM leaders demanded that the workers who have been terminated by the Leighton Company should be reinstated without any further delay and they should also be provided facilities under Labour Act.
