JAMMU, Sept 19: Amateur Theatre Group’s (ATG) performance of Govind Deshpande’s ‘Andhar Yatra’ at the Abhinav Theatre here today, was striking for its thought-provoking content that critiqued of the dark aspects of the present day power politics that heartlessly appropriates all social institutions for its ends.
Coming as a welcome effort towards resurrecting the serious theatre that has been the touchstone of the Jammu’s amateur theatre movement since the late 1960s, today’s Hindi translation of Govind Deshpande’s original Marathi drama by Vasant Dev, was staged under the direction of young actor Sunil Prakash Sharma. This also marked the first play of the ATG’s series of 12 plays to be directed by a young director in each month.
Today’s play marked with a high intellectual tone and tenor of the dialogues tested the acting skills of young actors who were able to render the subtle nuances with variations in speech, controlled movements and synchronized groupings.
Sunaina Kumari as the main protagonist Vasundhara did carry her role with a great aplomb. Sandeep Rattan Verma as Sadah Shivrao successfully gave an individuality to his character through an accent that also unmasked his ruthless nature. Other members of the cast who gave equally good performance were Sunil Parkash Sharma as Shripadh, Ankit Sharma as Ashwath, Vivek Sangotra as Vice Chancellor, Mohit Chib as Mahabal and Aman as Naukar.
The otherwise well-designed set by Mohit Chib and Ankit Sharma, due to close clustering of different units ended up constraining the free flow of entries and exits. The lights by Pankaj Sharma and sound by Lokesh, the background score by Ifra Kaka and Snam Sudan were also appreciated by the audience. Ankit Sharma assisted in direction. Kanchi Khajuria was the costume designer, makeup by Vivek Sangotra and Shivani Wazir. Mohit Purie held the PRO department.
