JAMMU, Dec 5: As a part of their country-wide strike programme, thousands of Anganwadi workers and helpers working in ICDS Projects in the Social Welfare Department (SWD) are observing protest programme at each district headquarter in the State on December 12.
Addressing a press conference here today, Swarna Choudhary, president Anganwadi Workers Welfare Association (Jammu province) disclosed that ICDS project workers have decided to observe one-day protest demonstration followed by dharna at all the district headquarters. She said in Jammu, the Anganwadi workers and helpers will stage protest dharna outside the office of Divisional Commissioner Jammu at Rail Head Complex, on Railway Road here.
Mrs Choudhary who was accompanied by veteran trade union leader Lakshman Ravinder Singh disclosed that strike is being observed seeking hike in the wages of Anganwadi workers up to Rs 11,000 per month, fixation of their working hours up to four only and not six and providing them all the benefits of the Government employees under rules besides converting them into the permanent employees scale with full benefits.
These leaders pointed out that ICDS workers go unpaid for the 7-8 months and this has become routine practice. The workers and employees are forced to face starvation. Under such circumstances they are unable to work. Their wages be paid in time. They demanded that pension, gratuity, EPF and ESI schemes be introduced in case of Anganwadi workers. They also demanded provision of uniform for the AWWs and Helpers and sufficient medical allowance for these workers. With the nonpayment of their remuneration for the last seven to eight months the workers and helpers are facing starvation, they maintained.
