JAMMU, Oct 13: Ankur Maitrika Hospital has performed first ever catheter directed thrombolysis in acute limb ischemia in Jammu region.
An elderly female, a known case of diabetes, hypertension and chronic atrial fibrillation got admitted during the intervening night of 6th and 7th of October with severe pain and coldness in right lower limb for last one week with imminent footdrop.
This condition has a longer window period of treatment than a heart attack, but if not treated in proper time, it can lead to both limb and life loss. The disease can be managed surgically or by endovascular intervention depending upon the stage of disease.
The patient with a strong clinical suspicion of acute limb ischemia was immediately taken for a ultrasound/doppler which confirmed total occlusion of right superficial femoral artery. The urgency of the situation and treatment options were discussed in detail with the attendants, who preferred an endovascular intervention.
The patient underwent peripheral angiography, which showed complete thromboembolic occlusion of the right superficial femoral artery, that was managed by a combination of Thrombosuction and catheter directed thrombolysis with excellent results restoring complete flow to all the blood vessels supplying her right lower limb.
Next day the check angio was a delightful watch to the eyes (like a morning sunshine of the spring) with all blood vessels upto the foot flowing normally and no signs of clot anywhere.
The procedure was done by interventional cardiologist Dr Syed Maqbool, who has a vast experience of doing such cases and infact one of his case series on catheter directed thrombolysis was presented in the world’s best peripheral interventional conference (LING) in Germany in 2019.
This was the first ever case of catheter directed thrombolysis in acute limb ischemia in Jammu region and Ankur Maitrika Hospital provided the best facilities to make it a success.
