JAMMU, Oct 25: Reminiscing the martyrdom of Brigadier Rajender Singh who made the supreme sacrifice for the cause of his motherland, NPP chairman Harsh Dev Singh exhorted the Govt of India to announce “Param Vir Chakra” (Posth), the highest gallantry award for the brave savior of Kashmir who laid down his life for the Motherland on the intervening night of October 26 and 27, 1947.

Describing Brig Rajender Singh as a symbol of Dogra pride and honour, Harsh Dev said that the role of the martyr was admired by one and all who had set an extraordinary example of dutifulness, chivalry and supreme sacrifice after determined fight against very heavy odds. He said that his sacrifice gained valuable time for the Maharaja Hari Singh to sign the Instrument of Accession and get help of Indian Army which eventually could hold Kashmir from falling to the evil designs of Pakistan.
Talking to reporters here Singh divulged that on October 21, 1947 when Pakistani intruders (Kabailis) entered Kashmir and attempted to capture it by force, Maharaja Hari Singh ordered Brig Rajender Singh who served as the Chief of Army Staff to defend the State “till the last man and the last bullet” and await military aid from the Indian Army.
“Brig Rajender Singh assembled around 110 soldiers to fight with the invading force of around 6000 opponents and his exemplary resistance followed by martyrdom eventually delayed the advance of Pakistani forces. Due to his valour, Maharaja was able to accede J&K State with the Union of India on Oct 26, 1947 by signing the historic Instrument of Accession”, Harsh revealed.
Asserting that martyr Rajinder Singh’s patriotism, courage and sacrifice was rarest among rare, Harsh Dev urged the Govt to posthumously confer PVC on the revered Dogra soldier who saved Kashmir to make it an integral part of India.
He further disclosed that NPP shall hold a public rally in Samba on Oct 26 to pay tributes to Brig Rajender Singh who hailed from Bagoona and hoist the National Flag at all the district headquarters on Oct 27, to celebrate 71st Accession Day.
Balwant Singh Mankotia appealed the people to celebrate the occasion of Accession Day like any other national festival with the same spirit and zeal as shown by them on 15th August and 26th January.
