Annual Urs of Shah-e-Hamdan observed

SRINAGAR, Sept 9: Amid restrictions and shutdown, the annual Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who is popularly known as Shah-e-Hamdan, was today celebrated with religious fervor at Khanqah-e-Moula here in old city.
The Urs is observed on 6th Zul Hijjah of Islamic calendar. Despite curfew-like restrictions and strike, more than two-three thousand men and women devotees thronged the shrine and recited Quranic verses followed by ‘Duaiya Majlis’. A nocturnal Shab was also observed at the shrine in connection with the Urs.
Shah-e-Hamdan, who arrived in Kashmir from Hamdan in Iran seven centuries ago, was an influential Muslim scholar who introduced Islam to a vast population of Valley and also Ladakh and is referred as ‘founder of Islam in Kashmir’. He also introduced the skills of famed handicraft amongst the people for which Kashmir is famous all over the world.
The devotees during the Urs prayed for long-lasting peace in Kashmir and sought peace, blessings and mercy from Almighty. They also prayed for the recovery of all the injured persons and sought salvation from pain, agony and miseries that people are undergoing in Valley.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti greeted people on the occasion of annual Urs of Shah-e-Hamdan. In her message, Mehbooba highlighted the contribution of revered Shah-e-Hamadan (RA) in preaching the message of peace and brotherhood enshrined in the teachings of Islam.
She also highlighted the role of Shah-e-Hamadan (RA) in introducing the skills of famed handicraft amongst the people. “While many saints have graced the valley of Kashmir but no one is identified with Kashmir the way Sahah-e-Hamadan (RA) is remembered for having changed the course of Kashmir’s history,” she said.
The Chief Minister prayed for peace and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir, which she said is undergoing lot of pain and suffering.
