Another tragic road accident has happened on Bhaderwah-Doda road taking the heavy toll of the lives of five innocent people and leaving 15 others injured. The injured include eight children. Hardly a month passes when we have not the news of a tragic road accident taking place here or there along either the National Highway or the Batote-Bhaderwah/Doda-Kishtwar road. After each road accident, there are messages of condolence and sympathy. The traffic police announces holding of inquiry into the causes of accident and civil administration announces sanction of relief and financial assistance to the kin of the deceased or injured. It has become a routine now and nobody seems to have the qualms of conscience. From recurring accidents on these roads causing loss of life should we infer that the concerned Departments have failed to reform the entire structure and surrendered to the diktat of nature or is it by design ? Punitive action against the defaulters and officials should precede any other measure of controlling traffic accidents. Was the driver of the ill-fated vehicle in possession of genuine driving license? Holding an inquiry is not enough, action is needed.
