JAMMU, July 20: Colonel Anshu Jamwal from Rahya village in Jammu becomes the first woman officer to command an Air Defence Unit (ADU) in the Indian Army. Commissioned from OTA Chennai in 2006, she has served as an instructor and a UN Military Observer.
After her posting at Army HQ, she now leads the Air Defence Regiment.

Col Anshu Jamwal’s father Bir Singh Jamwal said that his daughter always wanted to do something different while the family was insisting her to pursue a career in the education field.
“Initially we wanted her to become a teacher but she wanted to do something different. I decided to support her. We would together run at Govt Gandhi Memorial Science College Jammu and I would keep a count of runs she would make around the college,” he added.
Pushing women empowerment to greater heights, Colonel Anshu Jamwal belonging to J&K, becomes first woman officer to head Air Defence Regiment of Indian Army.
Colonel Anshu Jamwal was officially appointed from Officers Training Academy Chennai on March 18, 2006.
The Army officer has also served with the UN peacekeeping force as Military Observer in MONUSCO. On return to India, she was posted at Army headquarters and now has been given responsibility to command an operational Air Defence Regiment of India Army.
“We are happy that our daughter will command an Air Defence Regiment and she has became the first woman officer to do so,” Col Anshu Jamwal’s father Bir Singh Jamwal told.
He said that they were present on the occasion when her daughter took over the command of the unit. Bir Singh Jamwal said that his daughter always wanted to do something different while the family was insisting her to pursue a career in academics.
