Taking a cue from the states like Punjab and Haryana, and ‘Excelsior’ through these columns sharing the broaching of such an exercise by the UT Administration in early February this year, it is pertinent to note that the UT Government has decided and ordered setting up of an Anti Narcotics Task Force to deal exclusively with matters related to narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances in Jammu and Kashmir where there is reportedly constant spike in drugs sale and trapping of more and more people especially the young into its use and addiction.
The Task Force is expected to be effective and strong enough to deal with the drugs related crimes and is to be under the overall supervision of control of Inspector General of Police – Crime. Some personnel from the Anti Hijacking Units have been posted into this prestigious task force comprising various ranks. Other modalities and procedures about structuring the Task Force in respect of direct recruitments and transfers and postings are being worked out to ensure the setting up of the Force was complete in all forms. That being all administrative requirements, it remains to be seen as to how the backbone of the drug peddlers in Jammu and Kashmir was broken and their sale channels smashed and conduits severely punished as a strong deterrent.
