Sir,
This refers to the news item’ Dogri translation of Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone staged (DE Apr 29,2014). It is heartening to note that theatre in Jammu has come of age and various theatre groups of our State are staging the classical English plays-tragedies, comedies, histories etc. and that too in Dogri.
These plays, especially of Shakespeare and ancient Greek writers are not only easy to understand but also difficult to present on the stage.The. Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’ believed to have been written wayback in 441B.C.,has a complex plot just like Sophocles’ other play’ Oedipus, The King’. The translation and presentation of such a great tragedy requires scholary vision, sharp intelligence and enviable acting talent and the director, actors and all the people associated with this group deserve all praise for their efforts. The Government ought to construct auditoriums at district level to give boost to theatre and provide opportunity to the young to display their talent at an early stage as also to the public to watch classical plays in their own city and own language.
Yours etc…
