JAMMU, July 26: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jammu achieved a significant milestone by successfully treating a massive retroperitoneal sarcoma in a 59-year-old male patient from Bhaderwah.
The patient had complained of persistent abdominal distention for several months but remained undiagnosed after seeking medical evaluation elsewhere. Upon approaching AOI Jammu, further investigations revealed an enormous tumour within the abdominal cavity, spanning from the liver to the urinary bladder, occupying over half the available space. Following two cycles of chemotherapy, the patient underwent a challenging surgical procedure.
The surgical team, led by Dr Sujeet Bhat and Dr Avinash Rajra, along with the anaesthesia team headed by Dr Atul Sharma and Dr Khurram Malik, performed a laparotomy and excised the 30x20x10 cm retroperitoneal mass.
The procedure was particularly challenging due to the tumour’s immense size, adhesion to the intestines, and proximity to major blood vessels in the abdomen. Despite the difficulties, the surgery was successful, resulting in minimal blood loss, and the patient was discharged after a five-day hospital stay.
Dr Neeraj Bishnoi, Regional COO of AOI, emphasized the importance of a coordinated effort from various medical disciplines and the use of cutting-edge technologies to achieve successful outcomes in such complex cases.
AOI, founded by leading Oncologists from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre in the US, is dedicated to providing quality healthcare with state-of-the-art infrastructure and international standards.
