Crores of rupees have been sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Roads for improving city roads, expanding them where necessary, macadamizing them and drastically improving the conditions of drainages that drain off the water so that roads remain perfect. Enormous sums have been sanctioned out of the Prime Ministers Package for this purpose. The condition of city roads in Jammu is appalling. Ambphalla-New Plots-Janipur axis is the lone connecting road for this entire area. It is narrow and hardly two vehicles can cross while plying over it. It is all ill planned area with crowded shops on both sides and with maximum traffic round the clock. Traffic jams for hours at end is the scenario on this stretch. The road is full of potholes and heaps of earth dug out for laying the sewerage line. Every third or fourth year digging of the sides of the road takes place for months together and the dust rising out of the dried earth pollutes the air and environment. Government authorities including the PWD behave as if they have no concern with it. The irony is that this is also the lone connection to the State High Court and the judges, the lawyers and the staff of the High Court travel along this road everyday. Its condition is deplorable. In fact the condition of all the roads in the city of Jammu is deplorable.
