SRINAGAR, Feb 22: Army today averted a major tragedy by recovering three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from North Kashmir’s district of Kupwara.
A Defence spokesman said here that a search party of Infantry Unit operating in area of village Gazirial, detected three IEDs hidden in the hollow trunk of the tree along with other war like stores in the fringes of forested area last evening.
The spokesman said that based on the specific intelligence inputs received from unit source, the troops of the Infantry Unit, carried out a search operation 5 kilometre North West of Gazirial village resulting into the recovery of three IEDs, two weighing 5 kilograms and one weighing a kilograme. He said that other ammunition and explosive material including three mortar bombs, 3 UBGL grenades, 61 rounds of AK-47 and one Chinese pistol with magazine were recovered from the tree trunk.
The spokesman said that the IEDs were kept in ready to be used position with complete circuitry. “A major tragedy was thus averted by thwarting the ill designs of the terrorists who intended to cause violence”, he added.
The recovery comes soon after security forces achieved major success by killing two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba in Rafiabad area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district yesterday morning.
These militants were active in North Kashmir for past two years and were trying to re-activate militancy in Sopore area.
Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from the encounter site including 2 AK-47 rifles, 7 AK-47 magazines, one GPS, one radio set, two pouches, one radio set antenna, one watch and a compass.
