Srinagar, July 30: A major tragedy was averted by the Army when an LPG cylinder being used in a temporary shelter of a pony owner caught fire and was on the verge of exploding at Chandanwari camping ground of Amarnath Yatra piligrims, a defence spokesman said here today.
The spokesman said that after civilians raised alarm, a fire fighting team of the Army rushed to the spot and doused the fire immediately.
“The fire started when the gas pipe and regulator caught fire and got melted on the nozzle of the cylinder where the gas exits. The Army unit at Chandanwari responded with alacrity on being informed and doused the fire within seconds using modern fire-fighting equipment while concurrently establishing a cordon around the area where the cylinder was kept to prevent any accident as the LPG cylinder was still leaking and was hazardous. The State Fire-Fighting Services were called in and they shifted the cylinder to an isolated area to let it drain itself out,” the spokesman said.
