Army celebrates 49th Maharajke Day

JAMMU, Sept 8: To observe its victory over Maharajke village during the 1965 Indo-Pak war, the 3 MADRAS Battalion today celebrated the 49th Maharajke Day here.
In memoriam of the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions for the honour of battalion and the nation, the unit celebrated its 49th anniversary of Maharajke Day, Army spokesman Col Manish Mehta said.
The battalion was tasked with the capture of Maharajke village, located 13 km from Sialkot in West Pakistan, held by a Company during the India-Pakistan war in 1965.
“The brave ‘Thambis’ of 3 MADRAS with remarkable courage successfully captured Maharajke on the intervening night of September 7 and 8, 1965,” Col Mehta said.
Lieutenant Colonel B K Bhattacharya, Commanding Officer had led the attack on the enemy while Major Pijush Choudary alongwith five soldiers of 3 MADRAS made the supreme sacrifice while fighting in Maharajke, he added.
During the war, Thagdas captured 10 Mujahids as Prisoners of War beside recovering huge quantity of arms and ammunition from them, Col Mehta said.
A number of former Commanding Officers and veterans attended the functions.
All ranks of the battalion also paid homage to the War memorial of brave comrades at Samba on this occasion.
