Army celebrates Infantry Day, Lt Gen Saranjeet remembers martyrs

JAMMU:   Infantry Day was celebrated on Friday in a traditional and solemn manner at Nagrota Garrison here.

The day was marked by wreath laying by Lt Gen Saranjeet Singh, GOC White Knight Corps at the Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal and remembering the martyrs.

Serving Officers and men alike paid homage to the brave soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty for the glory of the nation.

On this day, 70 years ago, in response to the first threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our Nation, the first elements of the Indian Infantry landed in Srinagar and resolutely defended Kashmir from falling into the enemy hands.

On 27 October 1947, the Battalion Headquarters and a company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, hastily mustered from internal security duties in Gurgaon, were flown in to Srinagar.

These  valiant soldiers fought a gallant action tooth and nail and reversed the tide of the battle when the enemy was merely 30 miles from Srinagar and thus saving the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

This epic battle continues to motivate thousands of Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and men, who brave all odds of demanding terrain and adversary and continue to put up a resilient and determined opposition to every obstacle that impedes national sovereignty.

Infantry has been at the forefront in the entire spectrum of activities including maintaining constant vigil at the Line of Control, combating insurgency, providing relief to people during natural calamities and restoring peace and tranquility in foreign lands as part of United Nations Peace Keeping Contingents.

The challenges howsoever unprecedented and unique, each and every time, ‘THE INFANTRY’ as the biggest fighting ensemble of the Army, has risen to the occasion. (AGENCIES)
