Army chief reviews security along China border in Leh

JAMMU, Aug 17: Army chief Gen Bikram Singh today had a detailed review of security scenario in Ladakh especially in the areas bordering China as he reached Leh this afternoon on a three days visit of mountainous region.
The Army chief would be visiting Siachen Glacier and Eastern Ladakh during his three days visit, official sources said.
This was the first visit of Gen Singh to Ladakh after taking over as the Army chief on May 31 this year. During his previous visit last month, he had visited Northern Command Headquarters and Kashmir valley including some forward areas. He was yet to visit Jammu and forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) here.
The Army chief would be visiting Div Headquarters  at Kharu in Leh tomorrow.
Soon after his arrival in Leh, Gen Singh had a detailed meeting with General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Northern Command Lt Gen KT Parnaik and Leh based 14 Corps chief Lt Gen Rajan Bakshi.
The Army chief had a detailed review of the situation prevailing along the borders with China in Ladakh. He would have a review of the situation in Siachen Glacier himself when he visits the mountains bordering Pakistan.
The Corps Commander of Leg briefed the Army chief on prevailing security environment, infrastructure development projects and various initiatives undertaken by the Army in Ladakh region.
Sources said Lt Gen Parnaik briefed the Army chief on the situation prevailing on the LoC in the entire State including infiltration attempts by the militants and gathering of ultras across LoC and IB couple by Pakistan attempts to push them into this side.
India has a long border with China in Ladakh region.
During next two days, the Army chief would be visiting Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield.
India and Pakistan have held various rounds of talks on demilitarization of Siachen. The issue could figure again during the visit of External Affairs Minister SM Krishna to Pakistan in September.
Sources said the Army chief would have a detailed review of the situation on the borders with China. He would fly back to New Delhi on August 19 afternoon for New Delhi.
