JAMMU, July 27: Army chief General Manoj Pande today visited Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world in the Union Territory of Ladakh, and reviewed the operational preparedness, besides paying tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives at the Glacier.
The Chief of Army Staff interacted with the troops and lauded them for their tenacity and perseverance under the most challenging conditions.
He exhorted them to continue working with same zeal and motivation, the Army said.
“General Manoj Pande #COAS visited frozen frontiers of #Siachen Glacier and reviewed the operational preparedness. #COAS also laid a wreath at #SiachenWarMemorial to honour the #Bravehearts who have made the supreme sacrifice at the World’s Highest Battlefield,” the Army said in a tweet.
Top Army Commanders accompanied the Army chief during his visit to Siachen Glacier and briefed him on situation and preparedness of the troops though the Glacier has been calm for past several years with no shots fired from any of the two sides—India and Pakistan.
However, hostile weather sometimes takes its toll on the soldiers. Only few days back, an Army Captain Anshuman Singh sacrificed his life while three others were injured in an accidental fire incident in their camp at Siachen Glacier.
Gen Manoj Pande interacted with the Army Commanders and soldiers deployed at different posts in Siachen Glacier and lauded their courage for braving extreme tough weather conditions to man the posts and serve the nation.
The Army chief ascertained requirements of the troops at the world’s highest battlefield.
It may be mentioned here that the Central Government and the Army have been meeting all requirements of the troops not only in Siachen Glacier but in the Eastern Ladakh also where the troops are facing People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China in an eyeball-to-eyeball position at various friction points for over three years now.
The Chief of Army Staff later returned to New Delhi after three days visit to the Union Territory of Ladakh.
Gen Manoj Pande had reached Drass in Kargil district of Ladakh in connection with 24th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations on July 25. Yesterday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, 3 Service chiefs, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brig (Retd) BD Mishra, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi and General Officer Commanding (GOC) Leh-based 14 Corps Lt Gen Rashim Bali paid tributes to fallen soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Gen VP Malik, who was Army chief at the time of Kargil war, and other former Army officers besides veterans, Veer Naris and kin of martyrs were also present.
