Army launches women empowerment prog

JAMMU, May 6:  With the joint initiative the Army and Central Government have launched skill development programme in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu region.
A defence spokesman said that  Poonch district will be the first beneficiary of this joint initiative. The six skill development courses which have been identified are- driving & vehicle mechanic (driver- cum- mechanic), carpentry (Basic wood work), plumbing & fitting (Plumber), handicraft, shawls & embroidery,  agriculture, horticulture & allied courses and computer operation & IT courses (Accounts Assistant using tally).
All these courses are planned to be run in a phased manner over a period of one year in collaboration with various State Govt agencies (ITI) & Department of Horticulture and  Agriculture.
In the series of skill development programmes, Indian Army has started handicraft, shawls and embroidery courses for empowering the women with vocational training.  The  ‘handicraft, shawls & embroidery (Hand Embroidery)’ bears the glory of State heritage besides ‘women empowerment’.
The course for a period of three months empowering 60 unemployed and educated women in a joint venture with the District Handicraft Department Poonch at three hubs, Poonch, Mandi and Seri Khwaja will be started. The Army will be providing all financial assistance besides certification by National Council of Vocational Training, provision of tools/raw material and assistance in self employment through Government and private agencies.
