Army organizes seminar on Gujjar, Bakerwals

UDHAMPUR, Mar 1: Mahore based Sector Headquarters under the aegis of Rashtirya Rifles  Counter Insurgency Uniform  Force Headquarters, Reasi today organised a seminar on “Nomadic Life – Contribution of Gujjar and Bakerwals to the society” at Sarh, Mahore in Reasi district.
The Gujjars and Bakkarwals are two prominent pastoral communities of Jammu and Kashmir which have been an integral part of the society and have made immense contributions to the overall growth and development of the state. This migratory population frequently interacts with security forces at upper reaches of Pir-Panjal and Army as a part of it’s out-reach welfare campaign organises various civic-action programs for this community. The seminar adequately addressed the concerns and difficulties faced by members of this unique community during the long era of Insurgency in the state and the changes in the present environment.
The event witnessed active participation of eminent speakers who have been, closely associated with the studies of the Gujjar and Bakerwal community.  Prominent personalities from the civil administration, senior military officials, opinion makers and members of Gujjar and Bakerwal community attended the seminar.
Speaking on the topic, KD Maini, an intellectual, gave the audience a holistic insight into the historical perspective, culture and challenges associated with the nomadic life of Gujjar and Bakerwal community and also updated the audience with the development projects initiated by the Government.  Pradeep Khanna emphasised upon the valuable contributions made by Gujjars and Bakerwals towards the social and economic upliftment of the society.
The Commander of Sector Headquarters Rashtriya Rifles Mahore deliberated upon the fact that inspiration can be drawn from the arduous and challenging lifestyle of this community and invited all cross sections of the society towards strengthening the bond of brotherhood and bonhomie.
