Army recovered arms, ammunition in north Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Army foiled militant plan to cause disturbances in the frontier district of Kupwara on the eve of Independence Day when troops recovered five pistols and other arms and ammunition.

A defence ministry spokesman Lt Colonel N N Joshi said based on inputs about smuggling in arms and ammunition in Handwara prior to Independence Day, multiple patrols were launched by the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit deployed in the area.

At about 0330 hrs, a patrol party at Batgund noticed a person suspiciously moving.

However, on being challenged, he ran back towards village Batgund and jumped into the vegetation.   The area was swiftly cordoned by the troops and during the search of the area troops recovered a bag containing five pistols alongwith eleven magazines, eighty rounds of pistol ammunition and other stores.

However, the militant managed to escape under the cover of darkness. (AGENCIES)
