ARO asks migrants to verify names before casting votes

JAMMU, Apr 28:  The election authorities today appealed the migrants who have filled up their M Forms for casting vote in Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha constituency which is going to polls on April 30 to  verify their names and collect their voter slips tomorrow from the zones and camp offices mentioned against the polling stations that have been mentioned by them.
The appeal was made by Assistant Returning Officer Migrant, Sachan Dev Singh while talking to media persons here today.
He said the voter slips will also be made available by the designated zone / camp officers on the day of polling from outside the polling stations for the convenience of migrant voters.
He also informed that the voter slips issued will not be treated as identity proof and therefore the migrant voters should bring along any identity proof containing photograph on the day of poll and also for collecting voter slips.
Mr Singh, while giving further details said that out of 1888 M Forms received 1679 forms have been accepted for Srinagar -Budgam Constituency while 209 have been rejected on various grounds. The migrants eligible to vote in this Constituency are 5,098 while the total number of migrant votes in the Constituency is 36,015. However the majority of migrants have not filled up their M Forms, he added.
He however clarified that there are 1891 migrant voters in Ganderbal district while the Habakadal Constituency in Srinagar district has highest number of 16055 migrant votes.
He said 13 polling stations have been set up at various places in Jammu for migrants to cast their votes in April 30 polling.
Besides one polling station has been kept at Udhampur and four have been established at New Delhi.
Meanwhile Chief Electoral Office (CEO) while contradicting the figures submitted by Information Departments clarified that there are 1891 migrant votes in Ganderbal district comprising of Assembly segments of Kangan and Ganderbal. A spokesman of the Department said that migrant voters have not been erased from the district and 1891 voters are existing in the voter lists including 840 in Kangan Assembly Segment and 1051 in Ganderbal Assembly segment.
However there appears to be total lack of coordination between State Election Department and Directorate of Information. While CEO today contradicted of the Directorate of Information which stated that there were no migrant voters in Ganderbal district and released a figure of 1891 migrant voters in the district to the press, the State Information Department in the evening also submitted a rejoinder saying that there were 1616 migrant voters in the district there by contradicting the figures of Election Department.
As per the figures revealed by Election Department there were 36015 migrant votes in Srinagar Lok Sabha Constituency while as per the data of Information Department these voters are not more than 31670. The two figures show a difference of over 4000 votes.
Likewise in Habba Kadal Constituency there were 16055 votes as per the data of Election Department while this number is 14892 as per the Information Department figures.
Meanwhile the migrants from Mohalla Kocha Nidan Sahib which is commonly known as Panditpora falling in Khanyar Assembly Segment of Srinagar district in Kashmir Valley said that out of 550 Pandit votes in the area only six votes figure in voter list.
S K Handoo a social activist from the area said that his family has 13 votes and only four are in the list while two votes are from another family and the rest have been totally erased.
