‘Triple talaq law saved Muslim women from exploitation’

JAMMU, Mar 2: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today said the women were deprived of their basic rights in Jammu and Kashmir under the garb of Article 370 of the Constitution and August 5, 2019 was historic day for empowerment of the females.
Addressing National Commission for Women’s event themed on ‘Celebrating Inspirational Women’ titled ‘Tu Bol’ here, Sinha said under the garb of Article 370, large scale discrimination took place with the women in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Girls who were married outside Jammu and Kashmir were deprived of their all basic rights like entitlement to property etc. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, August 5, 2019 became a historic day for women when the Parliament abrogated Article 370 leading to empowerment of women in Jammu and Kashmir,’’ the Lieutenant Governor said.
He said the law against triple talaq saved the Muslim women from exploitation.
Sinha said during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu on February 20, a number of women beneficiaries, who secured a place for them braving all odds, interacted with him. They not only made a place for them but are also providing jobs to women and others changing their lives, he added.
The Lieutenant Governor also referred to Women’s Reservation Bill passed by the Parliament which will give 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and Assemblies.
“The women will be making laws in the Parliament and Legislatures,’’ he said.
Sinha said the dream of women-led empowerment has been has been realized during last 10 years of Narendra Modi Government.
“Women will also play a major role in the Viksit Bharat,’’ he added.
Sinha commended the endeavour of the National Commission for Women to bring together women achievers to share their inspirational journey ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8.
“Today ‘nari shakti’ (women power) is at the forefront of our developmental journey and taking the lead in nation building. The Jammu and Kashmir administration is focusing on women-led development with unwavering dedication and determination to support gender parity and gender equity,” he said.
The Lt Governor lauded the remarkable achievements and invaluable contributions of the women across diverse domains.
“I am proud of our ‘nari shakti’. From education to entrepreneurship, from information technology to agriculture sector, from sports to science, they are scripting their own success stories,” Sinha said.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma in her address emphasised the importance of encouraging young women to speak fearlessly and to promote empowerment and equality.
