Asia’s first ever snow sculpture festival held at Gulmarg

GULMARG, Feb 15: Asia’s first ever snow sculpture festival was held at Gulmarg today to attract more tourists to Kashmir during the winter.
The main attraction of the festival was snow painting, snow photography and open air snow sculpture, which was organized by eplanner event management in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Tourism and in association with Callisto Art and Culture.
The two-day snow festival titled ‘Snow Fiesta-2014’ was thrown open for public by Minister for Tourism, Ghulam Ahmad Mir in the presence of Director Tourism, Talat Pervez and Director eplanner, Irfan Quraishi.
The artists worked for almost 28 days in freezing temperature to prepare huge sculptures including 30 feet Kashmiri Samawar, Child -cradle, horse, igloo, snow guitar, Kangri, fish and 30 feet vintage car.
Minister for Tourism, G A Mir on the occasion said the purpose of the festival was to attract more tourists during winter season in Kashmir and to encourage young Kashmiri artists.
Minister appreciated the role played by young local artists to showcase their talent while chiseling out wonderful sculptures out of snow heaps.
The artists were arranged locally not only to depict local cultural articles for the event, but to generate interests among them for participating in such events, which can help them to generate economy and to boast the tourism industry.
Gulzar Kashmir, a young artist pursuing higher studies in art and fine music in Jamia Millia Islamia said: “The purpose of the event was to add one more event in the tourism calendar here, which will attract more tourists and art lovers across the world here, which can prove boon for our economy.”
