SRINAGAR, Oct 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president, Tariq Hameed Karra, described the Union Territory Foundation Day as a “black day,” saying that expecting the people to celebrate it is unjust and “asking for too much.”
“To say that we will celebrate the Union Territory is an injustice. You are asking for too much from us. The day the Central Government deprived Jammu and Kashmir of its status is a black day for the people,” he said.
Karra emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir cannot celebrate this day in any capacity.
“This is not merely the opinion of our organization; it is a sentiment shared by all. This is not a celebration but a black day for us. Those glorifying it do not believe in democracy and have disregarded the feelings of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The ruling National Conference, along with People’s Democratic Party, Peoples Conference leader Sajad Gani Lone and CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, boycotted the celebration, claiming the administration proceeded with the program despite the clear opposition from the public.
