Assam govt. employees need permission to remarry if spouse is alive: CM

GUWAHATI, Oct 27 : The Assam Government employees are “not entitled” to a second marriage if the spouse is alive and they would have to seek permission from the state government if they want to marry again, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

Sarma clarified to reporters here that the Assam government’s directive on seeking permission for a second marriage will apply to government employees from all religious communities.

The state government has issued a guideline making it mandatory for employees to obtain departmental permission before getting married for the second time.

The strict instructions have been given in an office memorandum signed by Neeraj Verma, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, under the provisions of The Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965.

“This is an old circular. We have so many cases where after the death of the employee both the wives fight for the pension. We find it very difficult to settle this dispute. Today many widows are deprived of their pension because of conflicting claims. This rule was there earlier, but we did not enforce it. So now we decided to enforce it,” the chief minister added. (UNI)
