Association of Industries laments findings of committee

JAMMU, May 21: Lamenting the findings of a committee constituted by the Government to study impact of industrial units situated in Samba on environment, Association of Industries, IGC SIDCO Samba today said that committee has failed to locate the cause of problem as well as suggest remedy for the same.
In a statement, Association of Industries said that all units have installed the requisite air pollution control system wherever the manufacturing processes involved use of the same, adding level of air pollution cannot be analyzed without conducting any scientific study, which was not conducted by the committee during its visit to the IGC.
Stating that all the effluent generating industrial units have set up treatment plants and all are operative to meet the prescribed discharge standards, the Association said, “as far as scientific disposal of hazardous waste is concerned, the same is not allowed in the State as the SIDCO has yet to set up a Common Hazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal facility”.
As far as damage to crops, the Association members suggested to lay emphasis on disease control in crops by adopting an integrated crop disease management approach, use of disease tolerant/resistant varieties of seed, examination of local agricultural practice, fungicide/insecticide. “These are some measures that needed to be looked at for a comprehensive assessment of the problem and suggesting remedial measures for the same”, the Association added.
“No pesticide technical material manufacturing unit has been set up in the State. Only pesticide formulation units have been set up where only mixing/blending processes are undertaken to prepare the desired formulation and no use of furnace and reactors is involved in such processes”, the Association said.
