Attacks on prisoners

Sir,
There has been a spurt in the attacks on prisoners in jails. After two severe attacks on Indian prisoners Chamel Singh and Sarabjit Singh in Pakistani jails, there were equal number of incidents of attack on prisoners in Indian jails also. A Pakistani militant undergoing life imprisonment in Kot Bhalwal jail was beaten to death by the fellow prisoner. Now, a prisoner Vinay Sharma accused in New Delhi gang rape of December 16 has been severely attacked in high security Tihar jail. These incidents are very unfortunate and also painful.  One thing common in all these incidents is that all the attacks are fatal which shows that the intention of the attackers was to kill the victim. The legal counsel of Vinay Sharma has accused that he was being given the poison in food regularly. If it is true it is very shameful and a crime against humanity. The main accused in the case Ram Singh was also found hanging in the same jail about two months ago and a foul play was also suspected in the case. The authorities must know that even the offenders of heinous crimes are entitled for certain basic human rights and their safety and proper treatment is the duty of the state. They should not be put to undue trouble and pain. The vulnerability of such attacks and their causes should be ascertained in important jails of the country and effective measures should be taken to stop these incidents in future.
Yours etc
