Avalanche warning in Kashmir, Met office says rain, snow normal

SRINAGAR :  A fresh avalanche warning has been issued in upper reaches in the Kashmir valley, asking people not to venture in these areas during the next 24 hrs.
Meteorological department has predicted moderate to heavy rain in the plains and snow on the upper reaches during the next 24 hours which could cause avalanche in the Kashmir.
An official spokesperson said here today that in view of the weather predictions made by Indian Meteorological Department and Communication received from Director, Ministry of Defence, Snow and Avalanche Study Extt, Chandigarh, a  ‘medium danger’ avalanche warning exists for areas above 300 metres in all districts of the valley and Ladakh region.
The inclement weather may also trigger landslides and blockage of roads in vulnerable areas. Accordingly, all the Deputy Commissioners in the valley and Ladakh have been asked to monitor the situation and take immediate necessary precautionary measures in such areas to avoid any loss of life or property.
Meanwhile, the administration has established control rooms at district headquarters for the convenience of the people to tackle any eventuality. However, in case of any emergency, people in avalanche-prone areas are directed to take extra precautions to avoid any accident.
Meanwhile, Met department Director Sonam Lotus said there is no need to panic as rain and snow during this time of the season in Kashmir and Ladakh was nothing new. Kashmir and Ladakh region besides parts of the Jammu region have been receiving rain and snow during the month of March and there is no need to panic, he said, adding that weather will improve from Monday.
