Flight operations resume at Sgr airport

Srinagar, Jan 14: A day after remaining cut off from the outside world, flights operations resumed at Srinagar airport.
Director, Airport Authority of India, Srinagar Airport, Kuldeep Singh, said that snow was cleared from the runway and apron early in the morning. “Flight services have resumed. The first flight started landing at noon,” he said.
The flight operations were affected at Srinagar airport yesterday due to snowfall.
A snowslide was reported in proximity of a workshop of Hyderabad based company’s, presently engaged in constriction of Zojila Tunnel, near Sarnal Sonamarg in Ganderbal district today. Click here to watch video
Police said, a low intensity avalanche has hit Sarbal area where Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) is having workshop. “As reported by the Company Officials, everyone is safe. No loss of life and property is reported as of now,” it said, adding, “Police and SDRF are monitoring the situation closely”.
Earlier in the day, an avalanche hit Tulail village in Gurez sector of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district but there was no loss of life or damage to property.
Meanwhile, State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has issued a high danger avalanche warning for Kupwara district and a medium danger warning for Bandipora, Baramulla, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts.
“Avalanche with high danger level is likely to occur above 2,000 metres of Kupwara district in the next 24 hours. Avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2,000 metres over Bandipora, Baramulla, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts in the next 24 hours,” SDMA said.
It said an avalanche with a low danger level was likely to occur above 2,000 metres over Anantnag, Kulgam, and Rajouri districts in the next 24 hours. “People are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas.”
In the meantime, the minimum temperatures dropped after snowfall with Gulmarg recording season’s coldest night at minus 11.0°C today.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 0.1°C against last night’s 1.0°C. Today’s minimum temperature was 2.0°C above normal for the city.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against minus 0.4°C the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.9°C against minus 2.4°C the previous night and it was 1.2°C above normal for the place. The coldest night recorded this season in the famous tourist resort in Anantnag district was on January 2 when mercury plunged to minus 9.6°C.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 1.2°C against minus 0.2°C the previous night. It was 2.4°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 11.0°C against minus 0.6°C the previous night. It was 3.1°C below normal and coldest night temperature this season as it surpassed previous low of minus 10.0°C which was recorded on January 2 in the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 3.6°C against minus 0.7°C the previous night and it was 0.7°C below normal.
Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 12.0°C and minus 8.4°C respectively.
A Meteorological Department official said that from January 15-18, weather is likely to be partly cloudy and there is possibility of fog in plains of Jammu and Kashmir during morning hours. Besides, he said, temperature during the day would rise in and drop during night.
He said another Western Disturbance was likely to affect J&K from January 19th onwards and chances of precipitation are 60%.
Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and will end on Jan 30. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bacha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
