NEW DELHI, May 24: Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare concluded his two-day visit to Sweden. The visit was aimed at giving further push to the Indo-Swiss health cooperation.
During his visit, Mr Azad held bilateral meetings with Goran Hagglund, Minister of Health & Social Affairs and Maria Larsson, Minister of Children & Elderly Care. Several issues pertaining to health cooperation came up for discussion during his interaction with the two Ministers of Swedish Government.
Expressing satisfaction at the unfolding of health cooperation between the two countries, Mr Azad stated the progress made under the MoU has been remarkable, and the keenness and enthusiasm of Swedish side was impressive. The high level visits during the past few years have set the tone and tenor of bilateral health cooperation between the two countries.
“While the orbit of cooperation is expanding rapidly, in view of interest shown by both the sides there is a need to give further momentum to the health ties between the two countries”, Mr Azad said. He noted that the progress registered in institutional collaboration between the two countries would provide an opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and best practices.
To explore the possibilities of institutional cooperation, Mr Azad visited Karolinska Medical Institute at Stockholm which is considered to be a premier Medical University in the world. While interacting with the President and senior faculty members, he noted with satisfaction that Karolinska Institute and ICMR have already entered into collaboration and substantial progress has been made in the area of collaboration.
In his meeting with Maria Larsson, Minister of Children & Elderly Care, Mr Azad stated that despite having a younger population at this point of time, India has to learn a lot from Swedish experiences and best practices in geriatrics as we have to prepare for the future challenge in this area. He sought the cooperation of Sweden in capacity building as the healthcare needs of elderly are different from other segments of the society.
Mr Azad also addressed the International Conference on “Fine-Tuning Healthcare- Improved Outcomes and Cost Efficiency Using Quality Registries” which was inaugurated by Prince Daniel of Sweden.
