SRINAGAR, Sept 1: The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) today announced that its Chairman and former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is recovering and will soon be seen campaigning in the Assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference, senior party leader and spokesperson Salman Nizami emphasized that the DPAP stands for the politics of truth and advocates for the restoration of people’s rights and Statehood for J&K, assuring that the party will not make any false promises.
Regarding Azad’s health, Nizami mentioned that he is recovering and will soon be seen campaigning during the final days of Phase I, but won’t be contesting elections.
“He was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi for treatment, and after two days, he was discharged. He is now recovering and will soon be seen campaigning. He will also campaign in Phases II and III,” he added.
On the rumours of DPAP withdrawing from the Assembly elections, Nizami clarified that the party will contest a limited number of seats-only in areas where it is strong-with full strength.
“Where we are strong, we will fight solo. In areas where secular forces are weak, we won’t create hurdles for them, but we won’t support anyone either,” he said.
“Only Azad can bring relief to the people of J&K. We will not make fake promises; he himself is a manifesto for us, as he has done more for J&K in just a few years than any other party,” Nizami asserted.
“Azad is committed to restoring what has been taken from us, particularly the protection of jobs and land, and the restoration of statehood, which must happen as soon as possible. This is the agenda we will take to the people, ensuring that politics is based on truth, not lies,” he added.
Nizami highlighted that DPAP’s focus will be on development, peace, and progress, and that the party’s candidates will ensure they serve the people and alleviate their struggles.
The DPAP spokesperson also remarked that when Article 370 was abrogated, Ghulam Nabi Azad, the then Leader of the Opposition, was the only one who spoke out.
“He shook the walls of Parliament. But today, there is total silence in Parliament regarding J&K, as if J&K has disappeared from the Parliamentary map.”
In an indirect criticism of the National Conference, whose Vice-President Omar Abdullah recently spoke about repealing AFSPA, Nizami pointed out that these are the same people who brought these laws to J&K.
