Punjab Chief Minister Pratap Singh Badal’s goodwill gesture towards the students from Ladakh seeking admission in various educational institutions in the Punjab is welcome. He will provide them free education. Students from backward areas in the country deserve to be provided full educational facilities by states that are driven by the sense of national integration. Normally, it is the J&K State which should have offered all facilities to these students. Nearly seven thousand students from Ladakh are receiving education in various institutions in Jammu city. They are faced with many problems like accommodation, healthcare, transport, lack of hostels etc. Even their elected representatives seldom talk of the responsibility of the State Government of providing them certain facilities. In comparison, the goodwill gesture from Punjab Chief Minister will go a long way in strengthening friendship between the people of Punjab and Ladakh. It is a historical fact that Eastern Ladakh had been part of the Sikh Kingdom under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Badal has tried to use that history as an instrument of building national solidarity. His impending invitation to the farmers of Eastern Ladakh will further strengthen the act of building cordial atmosphere between the people of this country. It is an appreciable gesture.
