JAMMU, Feb 28: ‘Bahaar-e-Ghazal’ a programme of soulful Ghazal singing by eminent Ghazal singer of the State Sham Sajan was organised here today by Indian Council For Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India at the K L Saigal Hall under its fortnightly programme Horizon Series.
The music lovers of the State were provided a rarest opportunity by the ICCR, Jammu to rejoice an engrossing, mesmerising and inspiring musical evening.
Earlier before the beginning of ‘Bahaar-e-Ghazal’ the Regional Director of ICCR, Balwant Thakur while welcoming the distinguished gathering said that today is the 17th programme of ICCR in Jammu and primarily in all these programmes an effort has been made to professionally showcase the varied performing art traditions of Jammu and in addition to this through the International presentations Jammu is being exposed to the world culture and its vibrant art forms.
Sham Sajan is one of the most celebrated singers of the State. Born in 1954, Sham Sajan graduated in music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti Allahabad. He also studied music at the local Music and Fine Arts College. He started learning light and classical vocal under Late Pandit Prem Nath Sharma of Patiala Gharana and later learned the ultimate art of Ghazal singing from Ustaad Mohid-ud-Din Khan of Jaipur and Hazi Aslam Sabri Qawwal of Saharanpur.
Retired as Music and Drama Instructor from the Information Department, Sham Sajan has composed 2000 Ghazals, songs and Bhajans and have sung over 4000 songs for All India Radio, Doordarshan and other National channels. Having performed over 1,500 live concerts across India, he has six music albums to his credit which include two each of Bhajans and Ghazals and one each in Dogri and Punjabi.
The programme was conducted ably by Lovely Sabarwal. Those who accomplished with Sajan included Rakesh Anand on flute, Sanjay Pashi on guitar and Karan Malhotra on Tabla.
The prominent among those who graced the occasion included Khalid Bashir, Secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Prof. Lalit Magotra, Dr. Jatindra Udhampuri, Khalid Hussain, Lalit Gupta, Pritpal Singh Betaab and Kailash Mehra.
