JAMMU, Mar 4: National Conference leader and former Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani said today in the Assembly that PDP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig had favoured execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru.
Participating in debate on adjournment motion on Guru’s execution, Mr Wani quoted a statement of October 15, 2006 in which, he quoted Mr Baig as having said: “in the interest of nation, if Guru is hanged, let it be, but it would be better if his death sentence was converted into life term’’.
Mr Baig, who was in the House, rose up from the seat to deny the charges. “I will resign if the charges were probed.
As Mr Baig left the House after PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti spoke on the adjournment motion, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the start of his reply to the debate pointed out that the PDP’s own house was not in order.
“Their (the PDP’s) one member has left the House as he was not given chance to speak. They are not worried on Guru. Their one member has gone to persuade the other member,’’ Omar said.
