Srinagar, July 17: In a display of urgency, Bakerwals from various areas of South Kashmir took to the streets today to stage a protest demanding designated pieces of land for graveyards. This demand comes in addition to the 5 marlas of land recently announced by the LG administration.
Scores of individuals from the Bakerwal community gathered at the Press Enclave, raising slogans and brandishing placards to emphasize their demands.
Among them was Riyaz Ahmad Poswal, who expressed the community’s plight as landless individuals and called on the administration to ensure their welfare. “We must be given both land and ration cards; currently, we do not have land for a graveyard,” Poswal stated.
Protesters argued that a fresh census should be conducted during the winter months when they relocate to Jammu. This, they said, would enable them to receive adequate facilities and services, including land for graveyards and other youth reservations.
Highlighting the challenges they face, another protester explained, “Whenever there is a death, we are forced to transport the deceased to Jammu or another location. Alongside our other struggles, the lack of land for graveyards adds further difficulties. The government must consider our rights in relation to the 5 marlas.”
