JAMMU, Nov 29: Continuing his election campaign, Senior Congress leader and party candidate from Marh Constituency Balwan Singh today visited villages along Tawi Island (Nikki Tawi) which include Tokrian, Kulyian, Kothe Bakshi, Kalyan Manhasa, Sampurannagar, Lakshmanpur, Sumb, Toph Manhasa, Malki Chack, Jawala Puri, Muradpur and Makwal Camp and held series of public meetings.
After hearing grievances of the inhabitants of these villages, Balwan demanded construction of a concrete ‘Bund’ on the embankment of the Tawi river to save ‘Island’ comprising of more than 50 villages.
He said that the inhabitants of the Tawi Island are repeatedly bearing burnt of floods due to their geographical location for which Balwan demanded a comprehensive policy or project for construction of ‘Bund’, protection walls.
He regretted that huge chunk of agriculture land in this belt has already been washed away in the recent floods so there was a need to take some effective steps. He also criticized Government for not paying heed towards the inhabitants of this belt. Making a fervent appeal he said that if voted for power, he will not make them suffer due to wrong policies and neglect of government. He promised that the adequate compensation to those who suffer losses in recent flood will be his priority.
He also said that the old bridge over Nikki Tawi need to be repaired and demanded a new bridge nearby connecting these villages. He also sought proper distribution of water saying that the water diverted to Nikki Tawi would be in 40: 60 ratio.
He also reminded its promise for fighting for RBA status for IB people saying that International Border (IB) across Jammu region especially along Marh segment deserves to be included under Reserve Backward Area (RBA) category and assured that if Congress voted to power, it will give RBA status to border Inhabitants who are regularly facing the brunt of border fury.
