Balwant to head IGCIC in Port Louis

JAMMU, Feb 11: Balwant Thakur who is currently the Director of Indian Cultural Centre (Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre) Johannesburg (South Africa) has been appointed as Director of Indira Gandhi Centre of Indian Culture (IGCIC)– the world’s biggest cultural centre of India based in the beautiful city of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.
Known as the magic man of theatre and decorated with Padamshree and the highest Indian honour in performing arts, Balwant Thakur has the credit of having held various prestigious cultural positions including the Secretary, Art, Culture and languages J&K and Regional Director of ICCR Centres of Jammu and Srinagar.
The IGCIC at Phoenix, Port Louis was inaugurated on March 11, 2000 by late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India and Dr Navin Chandra Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister of Mauritius.
The Centre promotes bilateral cultural linkages and awareness between India and Mauritius by organizing cultural programmes, cultural seminars, workshops and trainings engaging India based great masters, professionals and trainers for Yoga, Hindi, Sanskrit and in performing arts.
