The demand for banning opinion polls will not serve any purpose to the parties demanding ban, nor it will affect Indian politics in any way. Besides, opinion polls are not quite credible, though at times they may have proved correct. The surveys conducted will often remain in controversy. The political party which may emerge winner in these polls would like to continue them to be featured on TV channels. But the loser one would not like them to influence voters further.
Rather, it is information that reflects the mood of voters in a particular constituency. Those advocating ban on opinion polls should take a cue from the poll projection and make steps to improve its image among the electorate. This will to a great extent help them regain the lost ground. The political parties should, therefore, focus on providing good governance to the citizens of this country and reap dividends during electioneering.
The author of the above article has rightly described the ban as curbing freedom of expression which a democratic nation like India can’t afford.
