Bangladesh: Ex-editor gets bail in 2011 plot to abduct, kill son of Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka, Oct 3: A Dhaka court has granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman, former editor of the daily Amar Desh, in a case involving an alleged plot to abduct and kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, in 2011, media reports said on Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain granted the bail after a hearing on Thursday, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
According to the case details, the five accused, including Mahmudur Rahman, held a meeting at home and abroad for kidnapping and killing Joy, the then adviser to Sheikh Hasina, in September 2011.
On September 29, a Dhaka court sent Mahmudur Rahman to jail, the reports said.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque passed the order after Rahman surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case. After the hearing, the court sent him to jail, rejecting his bail petition.
Mahmudur Rahman was convicted by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor on August 17, last year.
According to media reports, Shafique Rehman, senior journalist, and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskrit Sangtha leaders Mohammadullah, Rizvi Ahmed Sejar, and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan were also convicted in the same case.
