Dhaka, Aug 7: Major General Ziaul Ahsan, who was sacked by the Bangladesh Army yesterday, was arrested in dramatic circumstances around midnight on Tuesday after the plane he was on was brought back from the Dhaka airport runway to the boarding bridge.

It was learnt that DGFI members took him back to Dhaka Cantonment, Daily Star reported.

Ziaul Ahsan was arrested after the Emirates Flight 585 he was in was made to taxi back to the boarding bridge from the runway, sources at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport said.

Major General Ziaul Ahsan, served as Director General of National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre since 2022 before he was relieved of duty on Tuesday.

Before that, he was the director of the intelligence agency.

The Bangladesh Army on Tuesday effected a major reshuffle in its top posts, by sacking Major General Ziaul Ahsan, popularly known as Major Zia, and reassigning the duties of some other officials ? a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country amid a massive uprising.

Major Zia, a two-Star rank Bangladesh Army officer was the director general of the intelligence agency National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC).

He was replaced as NTMC director general by Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman.

He was the first director general of the NTMC, a national-level intelligence agency of Bangladesh responsible for monitoring, collecting, and recording information and communication data. He was earlier also the first director of NTMC.

The NTMC is responsible for the interception of electronic communication such as phone calls, emails, and social media accounts.

In 2022 July, Ahsan was promoted to the rank of major general from brigadier general.

He is widely known for his work in the Rapid Action Battalion in various capacities.

Ziaul joined the Bangladesh Army as a commissioned officer on 21 June 1991.

He was awarded the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) in 2010 and President Police Medal (PPM) in 2011.
