JAMMU, Jan 11: The MLAs of Banihal and Udhampur today held protest in the Legislative Assembly over alleged discrimination in the release of funds to the Municipalities (Urban Local Bodies) by the PDP-BJP Coalition Government.
Raising the issue, Congress MLA from Banihal Vikar Rasool said that he had demanded constituency-wise details of the funds released to the Municipalities but the information was concealed from the House.
“Actually there is discrimination with the Municipalities in the areas represented by the Opposition MLAs and an attempt has been made to conceal the facts from the House”, he said, adding “the Municipalities in the areas of the BJP MLAs are being given sufficient funds by the Housing and Urban Development Department”.
He requested the Speaker Kavinder Gupta to defer the question as wrong information has been provided by the department. However, his request was not considered by the Chair prompting him to enter the Well of the House.
The Congress MLA was supported by Udhampur MLA Pawan Gupta, who too alleged discrimination in release of funds to the Municipalities. Both moved towards the podium and started arguing with the Speaker. They were also joined by Usman Majeed.
However, following intervention from the Treasury Benches they returned to their seats but alleged that discrimination was being meted out to the Municipalities in the areas of Opposition MLAs.
