SRINAGAR, Feb 21: The Manager of a Rural Bank in Pulwama district has gone missing after a fraud of Rs 33 lakh was detected at the branch he headed. He has been suspended and a case has been registered against him.
A Police official said that a Manager of the Ellaquai Dehati Bank disappeared with Rs 33 lakh from Lorgham Branch of the bank in Pulwama.
The official said that the Manager had forged the signatures of account holders to misappropriate the amount.
“Identified as Meraj Alam, son of Mohammad Nazir and resident of Bihar, he has been missing since February 17,” the official said.
“We have registered a case of FIR number 13/2024 under Section 409 IPC in Police Station Tral and efforts are on to nab the accused,” the official added.
Chairman of the Bank, Fayaz Ahmad Wani, in a letter addressed to the Excelsior has said that some irregularities have been found in the bank branch during routine inspection and the same are under investigation.
In a separate letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, he said: “During the investigation it has been found that the erring official has created some dummy loan accounts but timely action by the bank has resulted in thwarting any misuse of public money.”
Wani said that the official has been suspended and a case has been registered against him in Police Station Tral.
“We would like to reiterate that no customer account has been compromised and the money of all the customers is safe with us,” read the letter.
“The statements made in the videos…circulated on social media are mere allegations and completely baseless,” read the letter.
