JAMMU, Feb 21: An urgent meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu was convened today to hold discussion on the proposed amendments to The Advocates Act, 1961 by the Union Government.
In the meeting, President K Nirmal Kotwal explained the proposed amendments to The Advocates Act, 1961 by the Union Government and thereafter, deliberations and discussions on the issue took place and opinion of the members present in the meeting was sought.
The majority members opposed the proposed amendments in The Advocates Act, 1961 terming the same as unconstitutional, undemocratic, authoritative, dictatorial, which would undermine the independence of advocates and shall have tendency to dilute the institution.
It was unanimously decided that Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu will hold a protest against the proposed amendments to The Advocates Act, 1961 in order to show solidarity with Bar Council of India and other Bar Councils including All Bar Associations on Saturday at District Court Complex, Jammu.
Besides the office bearers of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu Baldev Singh (Vice President), Pardeep Majotra (General Secretary), Anshu Mahajan (Joint Secretary), Rahul Aggarwal (Treasurer), the meeting was attended by several senior advocates and other members.
